This summer, experience rock ‘n’ roll on the Bluff as the Hunter Museum opens “Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock and Roll Photography,” May 5 through Aug. 12, 2012.
Since the 1950s rock and roll has developed as the most significant musical movement in contemporary culture. Helping define fashion, language, politics, and community, rock continues to inspire and entertain audiences throughout the world. This exhibition presents 40 stunning, large-scale prints of many notable musicians, songwriters, and performers of the last half of the 20th century.
Taken by 20 accomplished photographers of the genre, the featured works help define the musical artists who created rock and roll. Starting with photographs of influential Blues musicians and early innovators such as Elvis Presley, through the British Invasion, protest music and the Psychedelic 60’s, soul music, metal, glam rock, reggae, punk, grunge, and ending with hip-hop recording artists such as Tupac Shakur and Jay-Z, “Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock & Roll Photography” explores the dynamic connection between the power of music and photography.
Guest curator Christopher Murray, with permission of the photographers and their estates, collaborated with David Adamson of Adamson Additions to create new large scale digital prints from original negatives and chromes. These new prints contain an immense amount of detail, unobtainable from traditional photographic printing methods. This exhibition of large-scale prints was organized by The Columbus Museum, Georgia and guest curator Christopher Murray of Govinda Gallery in Washington, D.C.
Listen Up
As part of the “Sound and Vision” experience, visitors are invited to enjoy the Hunter’s in-gallery audio lounge featuring recording from Bob Dylan, George Harrison, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, The Doors, David Bowie, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Queen and others. Many of the featured recordings have been remastered in 5.1 surround sound and will be presented in full or matrix surround. The listening lounge, located in the corner of the gallery and also features supporting material for the exhibition.
