Norman Rockwell at the Hunter Museum

Three paintings by Norman Rockwell, famed American artist and illustrator, will be on exhibit at the Hunter Museum of American Art from November 19 through December 18, 2011. The works are on loan from the National Scouting Museum through a partnership with the Cherokee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
The works testify to Rockwell’s long standing support of the Boy Scouts of America. He worked with the Scouts for 64 years, creating 50 calendar covers, over 200 illustrations and 11 covers for Boys’ Life magazine. The works on view are:
- We Thank Thee, O’ Lord, oil on canvas, 1972, a view of scouts seen in their tent at prayer.
- From Concord to Tranquility, oil on canvas, 1971, a portrait of scouts with an astronaut and a colonial patriot.
- Can’t Wait, oil on canvas, 1970, a young boy trying on his older brother’s uniform
Norman Rockwell is best known for his covers for Saturday Evening Post and other national magazines from the 1920s through the 1970s that capture the history and spirit of America. During this special exhibition, the Hunter invites area Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops to visit. Individual scouts visiting with their families can also receive discounted admission ($8 for adults; $4 for children) by wearing their scout uniforms to the Hunter.
