The Hunter is always looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join the museum. Volunteers are a vital role in the educational mission of the museum. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities and time commitments suitable for everyone including working adults and students, and we are happy to help you find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you.

Docents

Docents are enthusiastic volunteer teachers, ambassadors, and tour guides that are the exciting link between art and the community. We seek energetic volunteers who enjoy working with others, particularly school children. No background in art or teaching is necessary, just a love for learning and sharing American art with others.
Existing Docents

DOCENT PROGRAM

Comprehensive new docent training is offered every fall. During this 8 week training course, new docents will receive first-rate training on the history of American art, culture, and teaching techniques in the Hunter’s collection. After completing this training, docents are involved in monthly enrichment training sessions throughout the school year on the Hunter’s permanent collection and special exhibitions. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

SUMMER CAMP COUNSELORS

Summer Camp Lead Counselors are responsible for assisting camp instructors with classroom management and preparation. Counselors facilitate and plan activities for camper pick-up, drop-off, snack, and lunch times. Availability: At least 6 hours a week during the months of June and July. Summer Camp Lead Counselors must have completed high school. This volunteer role may be done as a college internship if permitted through the volunteer’s university.

Summer Camp Counselors assist Camp Lead Counselors and instructors with camp activities. Camp volunteers aid summer camp counselors and instructors in the facilitation of camp activities; help campers complete tasks; help prepare snack; and are an extra set of eyes on campers during outdoor activities.Availability: At least 6 hours a week during the months of June and July. The ideal applicant is a high school junior or senior with interests in art, education and young children.

FAMILY FUN DAY VOLUNTEERS

The Hunter provides fun, family-friendly activities on special days throughout the year to engage all ages. Volunteers help museum staff set up and facilitate special programs including art activities, interactive games, and in-gallery engagement.For more information, contact Adera Causey at acausey@huntermuseum.org or 423.267.0986.

INTERNSHIPS

The Hunter Museum of American Art offers a wide variety of internship opportunities for those interested in learning more about the museum. Internships are unpaid learning experiences for college students. In addition to adding practical skills to their resumes, interns gain a sense of the overall workings of the institution.

 Internship positions are project-based and scheduled on a rolling basis. While specific opportunities for placement change throughout the year, past placements have included Curatorial, Education, Membership and Development, and Marketing and Communications departments. Applications are accepted year-round and all applicants will be notified as to whether opportunities are available in their areas of interest by applying below.
