Analysis

"I try to construct a picture in which shapes, spaces, colors form a set of unique relationships, independent of any subject matter." - Milton Avery

Milton Avery chose a personal subject here - an image of his daughter. As you can see, the figure of March, the artist's daughter, has been so simplified that there are no facial features at all. The arms and legs look more like geometric shapes than limbs and her fingers have all but disappeared. He also made an earlier image of his daughter seen here, in a more realistic style.
