Influenced by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, John Henry Twachtman was best known for painting snow scenes. Many of his paintings depict his Greenwich, Connecticut home. Here he uses his signature muted tones and thick brushstrokes, allowing the tree and house to seemingly melt into the background.
