An Intern's Perspective

I moved from Chicago, IL to Chattanooga, TN for an internship at the Hunter Museum of American Art during the summer of 2009.  Before my work had even started I was impressed with the Museum itself.  Its architecture is beautiful and spans a century worth of intelligent design and development with its three distinct but integrated structures and the works in the collection display the history of America through art. On my first day I was immediately incorporated into the Museum staff, being given the responsibility to recruit for a Docent Training Program as well as accompanying Hassan, my supervisor and the Manager of School and Outreach Programs, to an offsite meeting.  From the first moment at the Hunter I was treated as an equal.

Since that point, my tasks have varied from being a camp counselor with kids of all ages, graphic designing, aiding the Registrar Department and working with other Museum and learning centers in the Chattanooga area especially the Chattanooga Zoo.  Because the Hunter is not a huge segregated institution I was able to gain so much experience in all facets of the Museum.  I have always loved art museums and this internship has given me the opportunity to see how they function on a day to day basis as well as opening the door for many opportunities after my college graduation in the fall of 2010.
